The Polo Report
By Steve Crowder

It is a great day for Polo on Mother’s day. All of the Moms should get special attention because they are 1/2 of whats out there playing be it man or woman. So always be nice to Mother, but be especially nice today.
Some trivia about Mother’s Day …  it was started by a Mother of 13.  Her name was Anne Jarvis. Annie had other things on her mind other than celebrating. It was a way to communicate between many Mothers about problems with children, mostly health issues then. It was only a few years from the Civil War and it was her idea to have Mother’s Day to help heal the sorrows and bitterness felt by many families who were divided by the war.  It was a very good tool in curing many of the family barriers brought on by the bitter feud. In 1908 it was declared a holiday in West Virgina and soon after it spread around the States and to Canada. In 1914 Pres. Woodrow Wilson confirmed it as a National Holiday on the second Sunday of May which is the day Mrs. Jarvis died. Mrs. Jarvis and her Daughter were not very happy about what it became as a holiday instead of a movement to bring issues of Mothers to the top.  They fought often about the commercial effect brought on by vendors using it as a card and flower market. The white carnation was long thought as the Mother Flower of this day and was for several decades eventually gave way to the rose.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
