Calgary, Alberta (July 16, 2007) – The 12 Goal Christopher Roenisch Memorial Tournament started Sunday in Calgary with two games.
Game one saw Millarville defeat Cymeric Glen by a 14 – 7 count and in the second, Broward Yachts narrowly defeated Tusk Energy, 10 – 9.
The first game was much about what has been seen previously as the Mannix guys (and gal) pretty much did as they pleased and coasted. Fred H. Mannix once again led all scorers with six goals (2 fouls) while Daniel Roenisch in his very valuable supporting role had four. Julian Mannix stepped up for three.
Cymric replied with five from Jeff hall and a couple for Mike Kerley.
Game two turned out to be an extremely entertaining offering that wasn’t decided until the absolute very end. Broward led by two at the half, 6 – 4, after trailing early in the first 4 – 0 (given one on handicap). Even at seven after a wild fourth, Broward outscored John Rooney and Company by two in number five to take a 10 – 8 lead to the last. However, fouls plagued Broward in the sixth, and Joe Henderson converted a penalty four to come within one. The trouble continued for the Boatmen and Tusk had a shot to tie with 0.4 seconds on the clock giving Henderson five seconds to sink a penalty five from about 130 yards. With the crowd on their collective feet, Henderson nailed one that missed by less then five yards giving the newest Calgary team the victory.
The newcomers were led by Tommy Biddle’s very strong effort of five goals (2 fouls). Cali Garcia-Velez and Yvette Biddle (substituting for Glen Straub) had two while Cachi Garcia-Velez contibuted one.
With the single at the start, Tusk scoring was divided evenly at three each for Henderson, Todd Martineau, and Matt Sekera. Both Henderson and Martineau had two penalty conversions.
Play in the Roenisch Memorial continues on Friday, July 20, 2007, with two games. The first game will be a repeat of the first 12 goal final as Tusk and Millarville are matched up. The next will see Palmer Ranch play their first game of this tournament. The opposition is Broward Yachts.
