Cinque Terre and White Birch engaged in a closely fought battle yesterday in East Coast Open action. Not only on the scoreboard, which showed a battle from the second chukker on, but in the play as each team closely marked the other one. The contest, which also had some good end to action. went into overtime with White Birch prevailing 11-10.
At first it looked as if White Birch would be in command. After allowing an early goal by Magoo LaPrida, White Birch scored three unanswered goals, two in a row by Aguerre (the first from the field) and one by Chris Nevins. Instead they kept off the board in the second chukker while Cinque Terre recorded a penalty conversion by Chino Fraysinnet and a field goal by LaPrida. The tables turned again in the third chukker as Aguerre made penalty shots, and he and his teammates played stellar defense, keeping their opponents off the board. At the half, White Birch was up 5-3.
The fourth chukker was penalty filled. Andres Weisz made a penalty 3 as well as knocking in a couple of penalty 2’s. LaPrida scored from the field. For White Birch, Aguerre hit a penalty three and Miguelito Torres made a field goal. Thus the teams were knotted 7-7 at chukker’s end. In the fifth LaPrida raced towards goal and scored. Giving Cinque Terre an 8-7 lead. The game was tied up again when Aguerre shot in a penalty 2. Then in the sixth Aguerre took to score, and once again the game was tied 8-8. The tide turned again as White Birch fouled, and Andres Weisz took advantage scoring on a penalty 2. This was followed by LaPrida scoring from the field, for a 10-9 lead. Late in the chukker Cinque Terre was hit with a penalty 3, which Aguerre fired in, tying the game 10-10.
Not long after the start of overtime, Cinque Terrre had possession of the ball, and a player headed towards goal almost on a straight line. He decided to shoot a high fly ball, which curved left. White Birch gained possession, and the ball was sent ahead to Nevins, a defender tried to catch him to no avail, and with 1:10 gone by in OT, he scored the game winner.
Aguerre was the high scorer with 8 goals, six of them penalty conversions. LaPrida, who had five field goals, led Cinque Terre, while Weisz made penalty conversions.
