LAS MONJITAS DEFEATS ORCHARD HILL—ADVANCES TO IPC CUP FINAL
WELLINGTON, FL— Las Monjitas moves on the finals of the IPC subsidiary cup with its defeat of Orchard Hill 9-7 at International Polo Club Palm Beach today.
Las Monjitas often called the “Golden” team because of it has won Gold Cup Tournaments in Argentina, the United States and Spain showed their winning form as they thwarted the efforts of Orchard Hill all afternoon.
In the opening chukker, Las Monjitas took a 4-0 lead and didn’t allow Orchard Hill a goal from the field until the fourth chukker. In the fifth it looked like Orchard Hill had finally come alive and narrowed the score to 7-6 as they went on a three goal run while holding Las Monjitas to only one penalty goal. But, in the final chukker the Astrada brothers, Nacho and Eduardo combined for two more Las Monjitas goals and the boys on the Hill could only answer with one more from Lucas Criado.
IPC subsidiary Cup final will be played Sunday March 8 at 12 noon between Las Monjitas and White Birch followed at 3 PM on the International Polo Club Stadium field the CV Whitney Cup Final between Audi and Lechuza Caracas.
Played since 1979 the CV Whitney is named in honor of Cornelius Vanderbilt “Sonny” Whitney, who along with his cousin John Hay Whitney, were important polo patrons in the 1930’s. The son of Hall of Fame patron Harry Payne Whiney, C.V. won the U.S. Open three times (twice against his cousin), and was a renowned owner and breeder of thoroughbred racehorses
International Polo is located at 3667 120th Avenue South in Wellington and hosts professional polo tournaments through April and all are invited to attend. The premier game of the week is played at 3 PM every Sunday on the Stanford Field and Stadium.
