Lechuza (Alejo Taranco, Camilo Castagnola, Juan Martín Nero and Will Harper) broke open a tightly contested match against Dos Lunas (James Fewster, Paul S. de Vicuña, Facundo Sola and Martin Podesta) Sunday at the Santa Maria Polo Club to claim Spain’s 2017 Maserati Silver Cup.
Dos Lunas took the early lead, scoring three first chukker goals while limiting Lechuza to just two goals, but it wasn’t going to be that easy.
In second period play, it was Lechuza who outscored Dos Lunas 2-1. After two chukkers it was all even at 4-4.
Both defenses were at their best in the third. A single Lechuza goal was the only scoring in the chukker, and gave Lechuza the narrow 5-4 halftime advantage.
The two teams matched one another goal-for-goal in the fourth, two goals for Lechuza and two goals for Dos Lunas. After four periods of action, Lechuza retained their one goal advantage, 7-6.
Lechuza reorganized and charged into the fifth chukker. Two unanswered goals by Lechuza went unanswered and Dos Lunas fell behind by three goals, 9-6, with one period left in regulation play.
A single sixth chukker goals was answered by a pair of goals from Dos Lunas, but it was Lechuza hoisting the Maserati Silver Cup at the end of the game on the wings of a 10-8 victory.
Juan Martin Nero’s Marquita earned Best Playing Pony honors.
