Chile won the FIP World Cup in May 2008, after beating Brazil 11-9 in the final game of the 2008 Polo World Cup in Mexico City.
The 33-goal Chilean team of Tono Iturrate, Jose Donoso, Gabriel Donoso and Jaime Huidobro won England’s prestigious Coronation Cup in 1998. Behind the leadership of Chilean 9-goaler Gabriel Donoso Chile returned to win the Coronation Cup again in 2004, and a third time in 2007.
Chile hosted the World Polo Championship in 1992, where it won second place, and received third place in the 2004 World Cup held in France.
Chile (Max Silva, Tono Iturrete, Juan Sanchez and Matias Vial) will take the field Saturday afternoon at 3PM against the United States (Marc Ganzi, Carlitos Gracida, Nic Roldan and Jeff Hall) at the Grand Champions Polo Club for the International Cup.
The International Cup was last competed for in 2012 when a US team beat England.
Although the Grand Champions Polo Club invites the public to nearly all of its games free of charge, a $20 per person General Admission ticket is being offered with all proceeds going to the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame, a non-profit educational organization, dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the development, history and tradition of the sport of polo.. Be sure to bring your own seating. Che Grill will be at field side with delicious food, snacks and drinks, and tented seating will be available to enjoy your meal. Field side parking is not included.
