Las Monjitas Rebounds to Register an 11-10 Victory over Catamount
in USPA Piaget Gold Cup Action at International Polo Club
WELLINGTON, FL (March 10, 2007) – Eight-goaler Sapo Caset converted a 30-yard penalty shot with 12 seconds remaining to lift Las Monjitas over Catamount 11-10 in a first-round game of the 26-goal USPA Piaget Gold Cup Saturday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
In other action, 10-goaler Facundo Pieres scored seven goals to lead Black Watch over San Saba 14-10.
The game see-sawed back and forth, and Catamount took its third and final lead at 10-9 on Roldan’s goal with 2:38 left in the game. There were seven ties in the game, the last at 10-10 on Ignacio Novillo Astrada’s 30-yard penalty shot with 1:34 remaining in the game.
Las Monjitas rebounded from its horrendous first match, scoring first just 1:45 into the game on Caset’s 30-yard penalty shot. In its opener, Las Monjitas scored just one goal, with 5:37 left in the match.
Caset led Las Monjitas (1-1) with six goals while Ignacio Novillo Astrada finished with four goals and Eduardo Novillo Astrada scored one goal. Patron Camilo Bautista did not score.
Martin Zegers led Catamount (0-1) with five goals while Adam Snow and Nicolas Roldan scored two goals apiece and patron Scott Devon had one goal.
Catamount missed three penalty shots, including a 40-yard attempt in the third chukker, and a 60-yard safety. Las Monjitas only missed two penalty shots, both from 60 yards.
Pieres scored four goals in the third chukker as Black Watch took a 12-3 halftime advantage and coasted to victory.
The loss eliminated San Saba (0-2).
Gonzalito Pieres added five goals and Nacho Figueras scored two goals Black Watch (1-1). Patron Neil Hirsch did not score.
Javier Novillo Astrada led San Saba with five goals while Paco de Narvaez and Toto Collardin added two goals apiece. Patron Tommy Lee Jones did not score. San Saba also received one goal by handicap at the start of the match.
The USPA Piaget Gold Cup continues Sunday with a tripleheader beginning at 10 a.m. when Bendabout (1-0) plays Lechuza Caracas (1-0) followed by Pony Express against Jedi (1-0) at noon, followed by Skeeterville (0-1) against Laurence-Wallace/Paladin Rally at 3 p.m. on Stanford Field.
Fourteen teams entered the 26-goal USPA Piaget Gold Cup, the second of the Big Three tournaments at International Polo Club Palm Beach. The USPA Piaget Gold Cup, which began in 1974, is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the United States and is in first season at International Polo Club.
The semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday, March 21 and the final is set for Sunday, March 25 at 3 p.m. on Stanford Field at International Polo Club.
The polo matches at International Polo Club are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 3 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game or in advance at the stadium box office.
