San Diego Polo Club Memorial Day Arena Tournament
We began the summer season here at the San Diego Polo Club with our Annual
Memorial Day Arena tournament. Twelve teams from Poway Polo Club and San
Diego Polo Club battled it out for the first silverware of the season! All
abilities of polo were welcome ranging from -2 goal to 2 goal teams, whilst
spectators, friends and family enjoyed the Asado BBQ and sunshine.
We began the day with the novice -2 goal teams. The first three beginner
teams: the Poway Angels, the San Diego Stars and the San Diego boys played a
2 chukker round-robin, for many of whom this was their first tournament with
The Poway Angels, Drew Middleton, John Torres and Molly Agee, taking home
the trophies! Followed by a faster -2 goal game between The Combine and
Surf’s Up, both teams battled it out in the 2 chukkers with the San Diego
Surfs Up, Tom Rath, Burak Over and Mark Stacey, emerging as the winners.
The -2 goal polo continued with a 4 chukker round robin, the two Poway Polo
Club teams: The Poway Ponies and The Poway Pals played each other first. The
Poway Ponies won and went on to play the San Diego Polo Club team,
BitchBoard, who fought a fierce battle but the Ponies, Scott Boggess, Todd
Randall and Matt Langford, were triumphant!
The pace picked up in the afternoon with the 2 goal polo match between
Jesse’s Gang and The Gang of Three… no love was lost between the teams
with each team eager to win! It was however Jesse’s Gang: Jesse Bray, Colton
Bancroft and Carina Deck, who were victorious over their rivals.
The final 2 goal match was between San Diego Club’s own Samaniego family,
father and sons’ team Calypso, against Poway’s, Cary and His Ladies. Some
high-speed polo was played right up until the final chukker. Cary scored
their 5 goals and played some very tactical arena strategy. It was a very
competitive game ending with a final score of 8-5 in favor of Calypso, the
goals were distributed between the family, Daniel, David and Harrison
Samaniego, who ended the day on a high!
A great time was had by all and San Diego Polo Club would like to thank
everyone who came to support the teams and everyone who helped to make the
day a success, from the flaggers to the announcers. We look forward to
welcoming everyone back for our next arena tournament on the 3rd of July!
