WELLINGTON, FL (December 31, 2008) – Michelob Ultra, sponsored by former high-goal patron Adolphus A. Busch IV, will play EFG Bank in the 2009 Outback 40-goal Challenge on Saturday, February 14 at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
“Michelob Ultra Polo is honored to participate in this event because it helps those in polo who need it the most,” said Busch, a former high-goal player who continues to sponsor the sport in various ways throughout the United States. “Polo is a great sport and I miss playing, but by being a sponsor I still feel a part of the game.”
The world’s best players are scheduled to play in the annual exhibition game, including all four members of Ellerstina, which captured the prestigious Argentine Open with a 13-12 overtime victory over La Dolfina in mid-December in Buenos Aires. Facundo Pieres, the second youngest 10-goaler in the history of the sport, Gonzalito Pieres, Pablo MacDonough and Juan Martin Nero are all expected to play in the Outback Challenge. Another player expected to participate includes seven-time Argentine Open champion Mariano Aguerre, who plays for White Birch in the United States,
“It’s like an All-Star Game,” said Busch. “This is an incredible game to watch and the cause is very important to me.”
Proceeds from the gate, a VIP dinner as well as a silent and live auction benefits the Polo Players Support Group, Inc., a 501(c)(3) which was created to provide financial assistance to seriously injured or ill polo players or grooms. Among the players who have received financial help are Rob Walton, who was an 8-goaler and was injured in 1995 when playing in Malaysia, and to date the Polo Players Support Group has provided financial assistance to more than two dozen seriously injured or ill players and grooms.
That’s Adolphus always helping our sport . He would never bring it up but he would be playing if not for his own problems as he had a monster back problem like 20 years ago and he has never played much since but of all the Major sponsors over my life in Polo he has always came forward when the Polo world needed help . Hats off to a very gracious man. Adolph Busch !!! Thanks
