Mt. Brilliant (Bo Goodman, Jason Crowder, Santiago Chavanne and Julian Daniels) took control of the game early Sunday afternoon, scoring four times in the opening chukker and racing out to an 8-4 halftime lead over Postage Stamp Farm (Annabelle Gundlach, Brandon Phillips, Mariano Aguerre and Kris Kampsen) in the day’s opening match of the 2017 Joe Barry Memorial Cup at the International Polo Club.

Four more second half goals allowed Mt. Brilliant to ride off with the 12-9 win behind six goals from Argentine 7-goaler Santiago Chavanne.  Julian Daniels and Jason Crowder each added three goals for the win.

Kris Kampsen’s eight goals led the Postage Stamp Farm attack with five of them coming on penalty conversions.  The win sends Mt. Brilliant to Wednesday’s tournament semifinals.

La Indiana 12, Goose Creek

La Indiana (Michael Bickford, Jeff Hall, Mike Azzaro and Gringo Columbres) eked out a narrow 5-4 halftime lead over Goose Creek (Maureen Brennan, Peke Gonzalez, Mariano Gonzalez and Tomas Garcia del Rio) in the second match of the day, earning them a semifinal spot on Wednesday against either Grand Champions Polo Club (Grant Ganzi, Inaki Laprida, Nic Roldan and Juancito Bollini) or Tonkawa (Jeff Hildebrand, Sapo Caset, Costi Caset and Facundo Obregon).

Former 10-goaler Mike Azzaro scored five of his team-high seven goals on penalty shots and earned MVP honors.  Goose Creek’s Mariano Gonzalez scored eight times for Goose Creek (six times on penalty conversions) in a penalty-laden game.

Peke Gonzalez’s Azucar was named Best Playing Pony.

Because both Mt. Brilliant and La Indiana are from the same bracket, a draw will be held on Monday morning to decide Wednesday’s semifinal pairings.
