Chapaleufú II beat La Aguada by 14-11, winning the first title for the Triple Crown.
Indios Chapaleufú II is Tortugas’ Champion for the fifth time. In the high handicap season in Argentina, this tournament leads the three most important tournaments of the year, including: Tortugas Open, Hurlingham Open and the Palermo Open. The Heguy brothers’ team won the first tournament for the Triple Crown. It is not just a matter of numbers, although the winner obtained the tournament undoubtfully. What deserves to be highlighted is the fact that Chapaleufú II was superior to all the other teams participating in this tournament, even the ones with which it didn’t have to play, although this might sound unusual. The unique team strategy left a very positive response: a collective game in its best form, the same formula that has always proved successful.
Yesterday, two very similar teams played the finals for the great BMW award. A close result could have been expected, but it was not the case. Chapaleufú II won the game against La Aguada by a three goal difference (by 14-11), due to two reasons: It had an immediate response when the rival took control of the game, and it was superior during the last two chukkers. The four men that form Chapaleufú II, who are playing their ninth season together, know a lot about strategy.
Analyzing the game, it neither bored nor dazzled anyone; it was a fair game, with 27 fouls (a relatively low number). The fourth chukker was decisive. If the three previous chukkers had been balanced and cool, the fourth one was electrifying, what influenced the psychological progression of the game. At 3minutes 38sec., La Aguada had scored three goals and it was winning by 7-4. Everybody knows that when the Novillos take advantage, it’s hard for the other team to catch up. That was one of Chapaleufú II’s virtues: it went to the halftime with a tie by 7-7.
With the scoreboard by 9-9 at the end of the 5th, the last 14 minutes of the game showed the best qualities of the winning team. Javier Novillo Astrada was a little dull, Eduardo, his brother, was not playing with the quality he had displayed during the previous games and Ignacio was firm, but he didn’t shine. La Aguada played as well as they did due to the great job of Miguel Novillo Astrada, who, conducting the team with intelligence, balanced a game that was not in their favor. Both teams received one yellow card due to dangerous fouls.
In the sixth chukker, Chapaleufú II was winning by 3-1, a decisive scoreboard, especially for the way the chukker was defined: Eduardo Heguy kept Ignacio Novillo from scoring a 30 yard penalty. To change history losing by two goals was almost impossible for La Aguada. No miracles occurred this time. Chapaleufú II defeated La Aguada in a very fair game.
Indios Chapaleufú II have won the Tortugas Open Tournaments in 1990, 1991, 2000 2002 and 2006. There is another title, in 1993, won by another team formed by the same four players, but under the name of La Martina. This team has five Tortugas championship titles and it wants five Palermos. Indios Chapaleufú II has obtained eleven Titles of the Triple Crown, five in Tortugas, two in Hurlingham and four in Palermo.
