Rancho Santa Fe, CA (July 20, 2009) – By scoring ten goals and getting one via the handicap system, Kelly and Chris Maloney’s Ohana/Tri Tech group were able to win the San Diego Magazine Surf Cup over Krista Bonaguidi and Nourdean Anakar’s Hanalei Bay/Sorteo Games quartet by a score of 11- 10 at the San Diego Polo Club on Sunday afternoon.

On a perfect day for polo and in front of an extemely enthusiastic crowd, Danny Juarez and Gaston von Wernich played very well – scoring three apiece – and as well as they were able to use each other, they were also able to use both Kelly Maloney and T J Elordi effectively to land the victory. Elordi, substituting for the injured Chris Maloney, scored three of his own and Maloney scored once on a perfect deflection of a Juarez penalty four attempt. Of the three by Juarez, one was a penalty two conversion.

The game was close all the way with the teams being even after the first and second, and the winners leading by only one after the rest.  The count at the half was 6 – 5.

For Hanalei/Sorteo, Marianno Fassetta was large with seven goals (one a 90 yard safety). Bonaguidi converted a penalty two and Joseph Stuart had a pair. Anakar, held scorless, opened up things up at times and gave Fassetta opportuities to run.
