NEW YORK (Fall 2009) Polo is not only a sport; it is a state of mind, a lifestyle, a value system, and a philosophy of life. Polo is about courage, strength, and speed. Beauty, elegance, and allure. Players of polo, whether from India, England, Argentina, or Mongolia, are united by their love of the sport and the adventurous lifestyle that goes along with it.
ASSOULINE is pleased to announce the launch Polo, The Nomadic Tribe. In this stunning volume, photographer Aline Coquelle explores all aspects of the equestrian sport, tracing polo back from its nomadic origins through its present day glamour. Photographing and inviting leading members of the polo community to contribute passages about each significant place along the polo route, Coquelle, who traveled around the world for six years to celebrate the prestige, cosmopolitanism, and fun of polo, unlocks the secrets to this chic nomadic tribe.
Divided into geographic sections, Coquelle investigates the sport on a global scale. She presents the reader with striking images complemented by elegant prose. The vibrant green carpeted fields, the carefully ornamented players, the brilliant sheen of their horses, and the deep brown leather of their saddles aesthetically adorn the pages of this spectacular edition. Each photograph displayed captures the essence of the sport and the passion of its players. She moves the reader through polo’s exotic locations, constructing a sumptuous visual reportage of what has historically been referred to as the Sport of Kings.
ASSOULINE’s tome reveals a portrait of the diverse world of polo, offering homage to beauty in pursuit of a modern perspective on the sport while maintaining the spirit and sophistication of this centuries-old game. This is the ultimate book on the sport of polo.
