The Polo Report
By Steve Crowder
That’s why we play this game. You always have a chance and that is exactly what is happening in the best Polo in the World as we speak. In the Argentine Open at Palermo it has been a wild and wet ride. Alegria, led by Canadian Rocket Fred Mannix 2, has not lost on the flat. They have been right there in both games, sadly they lost in the Open as there is no handicap, but a 31-goal team losing to a 40-goal team by 5. Today they lost to a 37 goal team by 3. Alegria is not a team to look past. Today, however, was not their show. There is a team called Ellerstina, who has won like 12 Open games in a row and are young and awesome. Ellerstina’s total age is 93 years for 4 players . . . obviously a young team, but they were beat today by Chapo 2, who are not young except one as they are a combined 149 years. They say experience helps and it must have today because age did win.
Some awesome stories are coming out of Argentina. Last Sunday an old friend, not as old as me but older in the way of Super Stars, Piki Alberdi replaced a suspended player on the Chapo Uno team. They almost won with another real youngster, who played 1 chukkar as a substitute for a injured player. Chapo Uno nearly shocked the polo world as they took La Dolfina and Mr. Cambiaso into 4 minutes in overtime before he did his deal and beat them.
All people I have talked to said Piki was awesome to step in and do this and young Pablo Pieres, son of Paul Pieres brother of Gonzalo and Alfonso Pieres, was also amazing. In 1 chukkar he scored 3 goals I think, maybe 2 but 3 sounds better to tie the game. That’s dreaming! Get a chance to play 1 chukker in the Open at Palermo and score goals. Amazing if you know Polo.
