31 riders from San Diego Polo Club, Poway Polo Club, and Lakeside Polo Club competed in 4th of July Arena Tournament chukkers at San Diego Polo Club at Rancho Santa Fe.
The day began with a Student Level round robin. Players Theo Anastos, Jessica Wadleigh, and Charles Schmidt (in orange jerseys) won their first chukker 3 to 1 against the black jersey Team BB with Alex Masterson, Susan Fuller and Rob Tamaccio.
The white jerseys dominated overall in the Student Level. Jen Heidemann, Bing Bush, and Danielle Sciarecci, had two wins beating both the others in the round robin.
In the 4 chukker game, Chukkar Designs’ white jerseys were lucky for Carlos Gutierrez, Ed Masterson and Jim Anderson. They beat Scott Boggess [B], Kevin Lynch [B], and Nancy Kirchhofer [A] splitting with Russ Sheldon [A]. It was a close game all the way: tied 3 to 3 at the first chukker, 5 to 4 at the second, 8 to 7 at the third, they won 11 to 9 at the final bell. Masterson and Anderson were high scorers with 5 goals each.
The feature match of the day was an Interscholastic game of San Diego and Poway students. (Left to right) Katie Neglia, Hollie Boggess, and Danielle Kammann in red jerseys vs. Jesse Bray, Austin Finch, Savanna Broderick in white.
Danielle Kammann rode hard against Jesse Bray. In the end, the white jerseys won 7 to 3 in high spirited competition with awards for all participants. Bray was the high scorer with 4 goals, Savanna Broderick had 3, Danielle Kammann had 2, and Katie Neglia 1, with terrific teamwork by Austin Finch and Hollie Boggess throughout.
Winners of the finale round robin, Sam Sheikh [3], Ramon Richard [A], and David Teater [A] receive awards presented by San Diego Polo Club’s pro instructor Billy Ramos.
The team of Frankie Questal [1], Cary Burch [2], and Scott Walker [B] in black jerseys fought hard, as did Team San Fernando with Roberto Estudillo, Fernando Gutierrez, and Carlos Hernandez. But after 6 chukkers of serious play, the white jerseys won. Team San Fernando’s Estudillo and Gutierrez families celebrated the day with three generations of family members enjoying the competition.
