Cool breezes off the Pacific Ocean kept the horses comfortable as players enjoyed chukkers and barbeque lunch on Memorial Day. The tournament drew a total of 31 players, competing in 18 chukkers, with winners carrying off silver tray awards.

Game 1 in the 2 chukker division for Student Level, the team of Cadie Brown, Mike Torres, and Theo Anastos won 4 goals to 3 against the team of Tiffiney Welles, Charles Schmidt, and Susan Fuller. Torres and Fuller were high scorers in the game with 2 goals each.
In the 4 chukker division and Game 2, the team of Lokesh Tantuwaya, Alfonso Martinez, John Heenan and Gerardo Martinez splitting, won 11 goals to 6 against the team of Richard Schallmo, Julie Empey, Nancy Kirchhofer. Schallmo scored 3 goals in the third chukker. Martinez was high scorer of the game with 5 goals.
Poway’s team ran away with Game 3, winning 19 to 3 over San Diego. Poway’s Savanna Broderick, David Teater, and Scott Boggess ripped it 7 to 0 in the first chukker over San Diego’s Stan Phillips, David Csiki, and Mike Torres splitting with Brittany Post. In the second chukker, San Diego’s Carlos Gutierrez was first on the scoreboard, playing along with Brittany Post, when the chukker ended 10 to 2. By game’s end Broderick had scored 6, and Teater had 8 to dominate.
Game 4 showcased Poway’s Holli Boggess, Danielle Kammann, and Steven Paulson against San Diego’s Katie Neglia, Harrison Samaniego, and Ed Masterson. San Diego had its best play in chukker 3 with 3 goals in, before Poway ended it with a 9 to 5 win. Paulson was high scorer with 5 goals.
It was tight in Game 5, with San Fernando’s Roberto Estudillo, Sam Sheikh, and Ramon Richards versus San Diego’s Colton Bancroft, David Samaniego, and Jesse Bray. San Diego’s Bray was first to score and was high scorer with 4 overall. Estudillo answered first on the scoreboard for San Fernando and hit 3 goals overall. With just seconds on the clock and a long run by Estudillo trying to tie it up, San Diego won 6 to 5.
Umpires Graham Bray, Billy Ramos, and Sam Sheikh whistled the day. San Diego Polo Club gives special thanks to flaggers, scorekeepers, announcers, timers, draggers, and cooks who made the day complete.
