Smithfield/Hawk Hill defeated Heathcote Farm 10 – 9

There was a defending champion Smithfield Farm and a new entry, Hawk Hill. Together, they are the 2007 USPA Governor’s Cup Champions. Hmmm…let me see…Philip Mactaggart…minus one or zero?…minus one or zero?…oh thats right, no losses in five weeks of play and he did fire in a goal in a 10-9 victory for his team. Thanks for helping us make that tough call Philip and congratulations for both your championship and going to zero .
Two tough teams played a great game. First chukker, one apiece but a handicap goal to Heathcote ended it 2-1. Chukker 2, tied at 2-2. Going into chukker #4, tied 4-4. A lone goal by Ezequiel Zubiaurre gave Heathcote a 5-4 edge at the end of 4. Chukker 5, brothers Ezcurra combine for 3 to 2 by brothers Zubiaurre and we are all tied going into the 6th, 7-7. In chukker 6, Julio Ezcurra 3, brothers Zubiaurre 2 and Smithfield/Hawk Hill proceeds to the trophy stand. What an awesome exhibition of polo by both squads.
Julio Ezcurra was game high-scorer with 7 tallies, Ernie slapped in two and Philip gave them the edge they so desperately needed. John Klopp, suffering from a tendon injury to his wrist last weekend was still his usual awesome self on defense. For Oakleigh Thorne’s Heathcote Farm, brothers Tatin and Ezequiel each pounded in 4 goals.
Both teams had opportunities in the 6th, very evenly matched. Heathcote Farm was able to walk proudly to their asado in honor of all the players.
It is what polo is supposed to be. All out war on the field of battle, followed by party, post game analysis, some very cold beer, great wine, great food, great music, great friends.
