It was the blast from the past as Empire Polo Club featured the Townsend Cup played between the two countries for over a century off and on it is Indoor Polo and the Wall is really the biggest part of the arena it contains the ball and it is used to direct the ball as well as it is sort of your Ally when you got the ball on it but your enemy when you want it bac,k it is exciting and a crowd pleaser whenever it is played and especially when you have two monster hitters and lots of spreed and both U.k. and U.S had that with Chris Hyde and Tom Biddle both 9 goals playing in the middle of their teams along with the crowd pleasing speed of a good indoor game is the ability to see so much more as the size is much more confined than the 10 acres of grass need for outdoor Polo . It would have a perfect opening for the new Arena at Empire if Mother Nature would have kept the wind away but while the horses and players loved it the crowd was not as happy and a packed house of close to 800 people started to drift to their cars as the mercury continued to fall but the ones who remained seemed quite happy to keep an eye on it all it turned out to be a very fun game to watch and was defintley exciting with Boom boom Biddle and the Riceman on the speed dial and Mr Gobin using a sweet touch with a soft shot at a very friendly goal . It brought back memories of LA with the Waltons Smoking Joe and Tom Goodspeed the Hawaian Hurricanes Tong and Decoite and Smith and Healey as they weekly defended :A with 3,000 spectators watching , England was up to the charge for the most part as Ryan Pemble and Sebatin Dunway covered the ends for Big stick Chris Hyde but the Yanks reversed the loss last year in the UK and came out with the biggest Silver this time
Most important indoor Polo brings Polo to the masses and gives People such an easy place to begin and if ever Polo needed a venue for beginners this is it as many Legends made there starts in the old Armories of NY ,Chicago, Boston and St. Louis now those are gone but almost anywhere there is a place to fit an Arena somewhere close and this is the door to Polo in my opinion . This could be the Gateway to the future of Ca. Polo if we just push it their are several great arenas in southern Cal with SD ,LA, and SB already in place and this one at EMPIRE POLO is a lock to be a hot spot for years to come.
