The Polo Report, by Steve Crowder – Well I knew it was coming. It was time to leave a paradise we had found in Costa Careyes. I will take a small part with me, but it will be only mentally, much like the Turtles made so famous by Costa Careyes or vice versa. It is a real story in itself. It shows the determination of the owners of this paradise to preserve its beauty and way of life. Every year for a couple of months monstrous turtles return to lay eggs on moonless nights. Nearly one hundred eggs are laid by each turtle and thousands of turtles arrive at this location. They come from here, but no one knows where they have been for sure. Some think as far away as Japan from research they have done, but it seems no one really knows. The Brignones, JoJo and his father, have made a refuge for helping these turtles survive by protecting the eggs for the 40 days of incubation. This is where it gets exciting. Sometime early in the morning they hatch. About 90% actual hatch and in 2 hours they are ready for their first journey. They somehow know where the ocean is and head there trying to escape land predators as there are many of them in the wild. These turtles have an advantage here as they know they can get to the ocean and at least to the water which they are designed to survive in. In the ocean waits the danger until they grow big enough to ward off hungry water-bound preditors. Almost every fish in the sea seems to want them so its said maybe 4 % will return to continue the process of life as they all face such dramatic odds. These magnificent creatures know where to return to for the next season. Some how a mystery of nature guides their cycles. We just really do not understand as it is nature and that’s the way it is in Polo Paradise. As I sit here in the 70 degree temperature at 7am, the sun coming over the hills in its real beauty is achieved. I look out to the sea, over towards the mountains and back at the sun. It is time to go home. That is why it is a holiday, because one may never work if he lived here. – Steve Crowder
