USPA National Intercollegiate Championship Tournaments
Highlight Best of College Polo
WHAT: First-class men’s and women’s college polo teams are set to face off in the upcoming U.S. Polo Association (USPA) National Intercollegiate Championship tournaments April 9-13 in Brookshire, Texas, just outside of Houston. The annual event features top university polo programs that have made their way to the big event through various preliminary and regional tournaments. On hand to compete will be some of the best up-and-coming talents in U.S. polo.
The UVA men’s and women’s teams will be back to defend their titles this year and will face strong competition from rival Cornell, who finished runner-up in both tournaments last year. In the past two seasons, UVA and Cornell have combined to win each national tournament on both the men and women’s side. Looking to knock both teams off their pedestal this year are talented squads from Southern Methodist University, Colorado State, Washington State and Westmont College.
The USPA National Intercollegiate Championship tournaments are the centerpiece of the USPA Intercollegiate/Interscholastic (I/I) polo program. With a mission to help expand the sport in the U.S., the program has seen a great deal of recent growth including the addition of 25 new teams since 2010. The USPA I/I polo program currently boasts 107 teams competing at the high school and college level. In 2013, a number of high-profile programs were added to the mix including the University of Miami, George Washington University, Emory University, Texas State, University of Pennsylvania and Virginia Tech.
