Carlucho Arellano showed streaks of greatness Friday afternoon as he scored nine goals in leading Traviseo (Lucas Arellano, Teo Calle, Juancito Bollini and Carlucho Arellano) to a 13-10 win over Odosan (Joe Chai, Ricky Mershad, Juan Redlich and Juaquin Panelo) in the opening game of the 2015 8-goal Aspen Valley Cup at the Grand Champions Polo Club Friday afternoon.
Odosan received one goal by handicap and quickly added to it with a goal from the field from Juaquin Panelo for the 2-0 lead. Carlucho Arellano responded with a goal for Traviseo, 2-1. Juan Redlich extended the Odosan lead with his first goal of the day, 3-1. Carlucho Arellano cut the lead back to a single goal with the closing score of the chukker. Odosan maintained the lead, 3-2 at the end of the first.
Goals from Redlich and Panelo in the second had Odosan in front by three goals, 5-2. Ted Calle got Traviseo on the scoreboard, but at the end of the period they trailed by two goals, 5-3.
Carlucho Arellano opened the third chukker with a goal from the field, 5-4. Redlich responded with a goal of his own to maintain the two goal lead, 6-4. Traviseo went on a run, scoring three consecutive goals beginning with a penalty conversion from Carlucho Arellano, 6-5. Lucas Arellano tied it up with a goal from the field, 6-6, and Carlucho Arellano closed out the chukker with his fifth goal of the game for a 7-6 halftime advantage.
There was no let up from Traviseo in the fourth. Carlucho Arellano scored from the field, 8-6, but Odosan answered back with a goal from Joe Chai, 8-7. Carlucho Arellano and Lucas Arellano scored the last two goals of the chukker for a 10-7 Traviseo lead with two chukkers left in regulation play.
Goals were hard to come by in the fifth. Redlich scored for Odosan, 10-8, with Juancito Bollini scoring his first goal of the day for Traviseo, 11-8. Ride-offs and blocked shots kept the scoring to a minimum as Traviseo left the field on top of an 11-8 score.
Carlucho Arellano stretched the Traviseo lead to five goals, 13-8, scoring the first two goals of the final chukker. Odosan continued to press their attack, managing single goals from Redlich and Panelo before time ran out. Traviseo celebrated the 13-10 win after the final horn sounded.
Carlucho Arellano led all scoring with nine goals (eight from the field). Lucas Arellano scored twice while teammates Calle and Bollini each scored once in the win. Redlich’s five goals set the pace for the Odosan attack. Panelo added three goals; Chai added a goal and the team received one goal by handicap.
Play will continue in the 8-goal Aspen Valley Cup on Saturday with an 11AM game between High Ground (Joe Meyer, Sayyu Dantata, Pedro Manion and Will Tankard) and Tonchala (Eduardo Barco, Pablo Pulido, Pedro Montoya and TBA).
