Argentine 6-goaler Alfredo Barbucci scored the opening goal of the game in Joe Barry Memorial Cup action on a penalty conversion for Valiente in his debut at the International Polo Club and teammate Julio Gracida made it 2-0 with another penalty goal to end the chukker. Valiente left the field with a 2-1 lead after the first chukker.
Lucchese’s Sebastian Merlos opened the second period with a goal from the field, but Barbucci made it 3-1 for Valiente with a penalty conversion and 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso made it 4-1 with his first goal of the game. Jason Crowder scored the final goal of the second chukker for Lucchese, who trailed 4-2.
Valiente added three more goals in the third with Barbucci scoring once and Cambiaso adding two more goals from the field. Andres Weisz was credited with a single goal for Lucchese who trailed 7-3 after the first half.
The pace continued to escalate in the second half, but the action was choppy. Valiente picked up goals from Gracida and Cambiaso. Merlos converted a penalty shot for a goal and Crowder split the goalposts for his second goal of the day. Valiente continued to lead by four goals, 9-5.
Lucchese continued to have difficulties breaking through the Valiente defenses, registering a single goal from Crowder in the fifth period. Valiente recorded goals from Barbucci and Cambiaso, stretching their lead to five goals, 11-6.
Lucchese scored the last three goals of the game in sixth chukker action with Weisz getting credited with two goals (one from the field and one on a penalty shot) and Crowder picking up another goal from the field. As the final horn sounded Valiente left the field with the 11-9 victory.
Adolfo Cambiaso led all scoring with five goals on the day for Valiente. Alfredo Barbucci added four goals and Julio Gracida scored twice for the win. Jason Crowder scored four times for Lucchese. Andres Weisz was credited with three goals and Sebastian Merlos added two goals in a losing effort.
Competition in the 2013 Joe Barry Memorial Cup continues on Sunday, January 13 with three games in the 20-goal tournament. Orchard Hill (0-1) is scheduled to play Audi (0-0) at 10am followed by a noon confrontation between Piaget (0-0) and Zacara (0-0). At 3pm Coca-Cola (0-0) will attempt to defend its 2012 Joe Barry Memorial Cup title against La Herradura (1-0).
