The Polo Report
By Steve Crowder
Jan. 30th, 2011
Julian Mannix and his Hawks won the Jan.2011 Wanders Cup in convincing fashion. It was loaded up with West Coast Young Guns Julian Mannix and Jason Crowder they thrashed Lechuza in the finals on Saturday. The Hawks blew by their competition all month long. Julian and Jason were supported by long time Desert player Batata or real name Juan Curbelo.
The Flying Uruguayian from home of Polo star Pelon Sterling and young Diego Arellano, the only member from the East coast, but Jason said he was a team player beyond words to work for the team. The Picture on PoloLine looked like the Big Mac (Fred Mannix 1 and Lady Mannix were all smiles as they also won Best Playing Pony with Jason’s Winsome getting that honor.
Also in the 20-goal Competition are Jason and Santi Torres joining up with ERG from Houston and they won their first game against a tough Bendabout team as they join Paco DeNarvaez and main man and Boss man Scott Woods.
It looks like the West Coast can still make Polo Players! Young Julian and Big Bro Fred, Jr. will be taking a team in the US Open as well as the other 26-goal tournaments that start in late Feb. until mid April . Some of this Polo wll be seen on Live feed starting this coming Sunday. Not sure how you get it, but they say it will be on.
In the Desert it was Finals time as well and the two bigger Finals were blowouts as Jef Graham and his Barrossa stepped all over Storm Cat/Tri Tech in a final game at Empire where the Huge Lions keep watch. They needed to be there to save Storm/Tri from Jared Sheldon, a young gun out of Poway, as he had a banner day with supporting Jef Graham, Erik Wright and Trotz. They won both of the Jan. Tournaments at the Jewel of the Desert Empire Polo Club and Twin Palms.
In the 4-Goal Finals at Empire, it was 3 Ladies and a Silvestre pounding their way through as Cam Clark Ford did a demo job early and hung on for the win.Dayelle Fargey and Canelo Silvestre smoked around with Trish Fitzgerald and Roxy Keyfauver shutting the door on Mrs Gina Padilla and team. All of this with a big crowd and lots of party-minded people at the super clean Home of the Big cats. They are BIG (the new LIONS) I suggest you drive by and have a look. When I said the Lions were going to roar again I had no idea how loud they might be.
At Eldorado it was also finals time and with a nice crowd as well. There was two finals as The Colorado Cowgirl MVP as well Jenny Luttrel led her Cotterel Farm team over the Haciendas of Nick Morrision, who just needed more sticks today. Then it was on to the big one. It started out one way and it ended up the other way as Dan Horn and his Palm Desert team jumped all over Hanalei Bay and The Bonaguidis early, but the Hawaiians erupted after being down 3 to 1 and it was no mas. Fast –Etta (Mariano Fassetta) and his very fast Caballos started flying and Mr. Bones (Ron Bonaguidi) and boss man lit it up from then on with a very good support from Ms. Bones aka Krista and Alvaro Tadeo as they flew to the victory stand.
It was just a year ago when ERG took the 12-goal Finals from Palm Desert and had Fassetta and Jason on the victory stand now 3400 miles apart they both are standing on the victory table still at the head of the class. Action will continue this Friday as both Clubs head into a Fablous Feb.
