Heavy rains and wet fields have caused a delay in the 2015 USPA Monty Waterbury Cup competition at the Greenwich Polo Club, announced club manager Alex Roldan.
Saturday’s match between Tupungato (Luis Rinaldini, Nick Manifold, Joao Paulo Ganon and Tommy Biddle) and Shreve, Crump & Low (Chris Brant, Joaquin Panelo, Matias Magrini and Kris Kampsen) was rained out after the first chukker with Tupungato holding a narrow 3-2 lead. Tupungato received one goal by handicap and picked up single goals from Tommy Biddle and Nick Manifold. Matias Magrini and Kris Kampsen scored for Shreve, Crump & Low, who trailed 3-2 when Saturday’s downpour forced the postponement of the game.
Rains continued through the night, leaving the fields unplayable on Sunday when White Birch Farm (Santino Magrini, Hilario Ulloa, Mariano Aguerre and Peter Brant) was scheduled to play Airstream (Peter Orthwein, Guille Aguero, Mariano Gonzalez and Michel Dorignac).
The fields will get daily inspections with tournament play resuming when the playing surface is safe.
White Birch Farm returns as the 2014 defending Monty Waterbury Cup champion and has already recorded a 13-9 win over Tupungato in the opening round of play.
