With armbands for Skeeter polo continued today in the U.S. Open with the graces of the Johnston family. Last night when word leaked out about the tragedy of Skeeter Johnston’s fatal accident many patrons were convinced we should just end the Open right then and there. The Johnston Family said the U.S. Opens needs to continue and that would have been the way Skeeter would have wanted it so there was only one game today. Skeeterville will try to regroup and have moved their game to Sat.
In a very good fast and furious game it was Lechuza and Victor Vargas out doing the Whitney Cup Champs Catamount. They had to come from behind as they were down 3 several times in the 1st 1/2. It was Jeff Blake and Mr. Vargas bringing Lechuza back. It was a Sebe show as the 10 goaler showed his muscle and took them all on and he got it done. It turned into a huge team effort as the Lechuza boys in white constantly turned the blue the wrong way. Nick Roldan kept coming back with his unusual dangerous threat and often got it done, but the experience of the hard-riding Lechuza kept the damage to a minimum. Catamount is now out of the U.S. Open and heads south.
In other action down south it was the first annual American Polo Horse Assoc. Sale where they would scare CA out of polo. Unbroken horses brought from 3,000 to 6,500 dollars and several embryos ready to foal brought around 30 grand. A 6 yr. old stud brought 200 thousand dollars and has never played above 20-goal to mares about 12 and 24 years old sold for 200 and 170 grand but good for breeding. Hopefully the sale topper was the stud horse, but one embryo did sell for 100 grand so our 5 grand horses seem like a very good deal even in California. Like I say its another world down here, but it should not be. You see a 1000 people at weekday games because the polo is good and thats my story. Good polo makes fans and fans make money and money for the club saves money for members so thats the way I see it. We do say so long to Skeeter Summerfield Johnston as super star in our world! See ya
