The Celebrity Ranch Polo Team won their final two games of the 2012 spring season and in doing so, remained undefeated for the year. Their first win of the month of June, 2012 was at the Will Rogers Polo Club (the Celebrity Cup) on June 2 and the second was at Celebrity Ranch (the Temecula Cup) on June 16.
Playing in front of a wonderful crowd at Will Rogers and playing outdoor for the first time (as a team), Celebrity Ranch’s Geraldine Strunsky and Scott Walker picked up Patrick Uretz and Hayward Pardue for the trip up to Los Angeles. The Will Rogers foursome was comprised of Hannah Taylor, Andrew Bossom, Domingo Questel, and Tom Scheurman.
From the outset, the not so gracious hosts led early and it seemed as if Celebrity Ranch’s designation of undefeated might be in jeopardy. With Questel in control and organizing – as he has done for so many years at this location – Will Rogers were rolling. However, Uretz pulled the visitors together and, having been down by two, came back to grab a tie at six after the final chukker, and at the same time, force a shootout.
With the number one’s going first the ‘overtime’ didn’t last very long as Strunsky converted her opportunity and Celebrity Ranch won the Celebrity Cup to remain undefeated. Indeed, their foray to the grass was successful – albeit by the narrowest of margins.
Back home at Celebrity Ranch, on June 16, and in front of a large local and very enthusiastic crowd, Strunsky and Walker, along with Alvaro Tadeo, would host Kingscliff – Joe Anthony, Miguel Questel, and Alejandro Nordheimer – in the final game of the season.
As usual, Celebrity Ranch started quickly and led early as Tadeo adapted easily to the arena game. However, Nordheimer, a strong and very clever arena player, was able to get Kingscliff back into the contest and the first chukker ended with the visitors in the lead at 2 – 1.
Tadeo changed strategy in the second and played a very deep defensive role to counter Nordheimer’s long and accurate drives. As a result of his pinpoint backhands, Strunsky, playing in front, and Walker, in the middle, were able to get open many times allowing Celebrity Ranch to score four goals. Nordheimer was able to get by Tadeo on several occasions and the half ended with the hosts leading by one at 5 – 4.
Celebrity Ranch contiued to press in the second half as the front end continued to get open, resulting in four more goals. Kingscliff was able to counter three times, but it was to no avail, and Celebrity Ranch, to the delight of the local crowd, had won by a count of 9 – 7. As a result, the Temecula Cup was theirs and they, as well, remained undefeated in 2012.
For the winners, Strunsky scored four goals, Walker had three, and Tadeo added a pair. Nordheimer replied with four counters for Kingscliff and Anthony had two along with one from Questel.
The 2012 season was extremely successful for not only the Celebrity Ranch Polo Team, but for the Celebrity Foundation as well, with all procedes going to benefit children’s programs at Celebrity Ranch.
