The Polo Report
By Steve Crowder
April 1 st also known as April Fools Day and it was a perfect day for polo. In the desert it was about 73 degrees with a slight breeze and a crowd seldom seen at polo. By that comment I mean HUGE. At Empire Polo Club the VIP seats were crammed and they added many seats to the general area. There were a lot of tailgaters and they had a great show as the dollars were on the line today.
It was another Rocky Mountain team taking the 4-Goal Lions’ Cup Title. This time the team was named Rocky Mountain High led by Noah Sprung. They took the big cash as they stopped Bolko Kissling and company in overtime to the delight of the crowd.
The $50,000 8-10 Goal Champions’Cup was won by Jef Graham’s Barrossa (Erik Wright, Santiago Trotz, Jesse Bray (subbing for Ernie Ezcurra) and Jef Graham. They stopped a hard-hitting and running Trinity (Robin and Rick Paicius, Agustin Zavaleta and Clemente Zavaleta). The lovely Mrs. Robin and honey Rick paired up with the rockin Zavaleta’s Clemente and Uncle Agustin. Barrossa had Jesse Bray, who was also the the MVP of the tournament. Jesse was playing Ernie Ezcurra’s flying machines to show his skills and it all paid off. Jesse made them look so good and even brought home the Best Playing Pony award for a mare of Ernie’s named Sharapova. It was a perfect day for the new world as EMPIRE POLO shows it is the “Place To Be” every Sunday afternoon for winter polo.
Down south it was 26-goal polo, but something went wrong as both winners killed their opponents by rather large margins of over 5 goals. So what will the handicaps be tomorrow? Audi got spanked by Lechuza and Adolfo Cambiaso replaced himself as he is injured and a makeshift team that included former Desert Rat Santi Torres blew away Coke and took all the fizz away. Both of these teams go to 2 and 0 in the Open play .
see ya
Does anyone else wonder how the only two teams rated at three goals could beat out the other four teams rated at four goals to get to the finals of a four goal tournament? Maybe a few handicap changes are needed.
