The Polo Report
By Steve Crowder
John Westley made one of the most enjoyable days one can remember with his Young People’s day of Polo at the Santa Barbara Arena Club. Kids from 3 continents at least, maybe 4 , had so much fun. Where else in the world will you see 10-goal grooms, mother-in laws , grandparents, mothers, brothers, sisters and dads all getting along? It was awesome to watch and to know we still do have some real people in our sport who care.
John and his Wife Wendy with help of some other locals set up a day of polo for the youngsters where they were the stars. It was magic as you could see rooms such as Adolfo, Sebastien and Agustin all 9 or above leading horses, tightening girths, adjusting stirrups and helping. The Kids all seemed to have a good time from 5 years of age to about 15. Some little guys were big young A.Cambiaso and his sister, who I hear are 5 and 7 are a chip off the old block. Young Mackenzie Weiss about 2.5 feet tall is flying around on a 15. 2 hand horse. Some kids seemed quite quick out there as well. Young Henry Porter was very quick as well as Conrad Kissling, who may be better than dad already. A young lady out of Tennessee was also very quick.
I do not know many of the names of these young people, but the Ganzi Gang and a boy named Johnny seemed very sharp. Young Faco Merlos was moving well and I think at least one Klentner, maybe 2 and a whole lot more participated too. All I can say is thanks for coming and a huge thanks to John and Wendy. IT MAY HAVE NOT BEEN A SUNNY DAY BUT IT BROUGHT A SUNNY SIDE OF THE POLO WORLD. THANKS.
Also if any of you are looking to start the game or know someone who wants to tell them to contact John @ the Santa Barbara Polo School. He is very good.
Today the last round of round robin action to see who goes and who is out as the 1 st game is just for position of 1 or 2 in the semis. The other is who wins by what, so it will be a little bit more focused I am sure. Come on out and see the best in action.
See ya.
Right on Steve. Had the chance to see the young folks play last week and the future of polo looks bright.
Hey, Steve I played with a student of John’s and yours this weekend. He has come a long way in a short time! What a sponge for info and he puts it right to work – Shane Flock. Good job, guys.
