The Polo Report

One of the big things people were looking for at the Lions Den was safety of the fields. I know people were not exactly flying around, but there were a few players who were speeding about and could relate. We know Al Haagen has been putting a lot of time and money in the fields and after coring and measuring root depth with David, Empire’s head grounds keeper, we found a good mix of sand compost and moisture.  The fields root depth was near 8 inches with lot of branches . The rye is very thick and this may lead to need of a little more sand, but David says that can be done quick. No one reported any slipping. Ashton Wolf actually told me he played two horses without back shoes, not that that is a very good idea, but if they did not slip it has to be much better.  There were a couple of wrecks on Sat. which I investigated, but both a simple case of human error, not field conditions. We would like to know your opinions on fields as David and Big Al want these to be as good as they were 15 years ago when they played 40-goal polo here, so let us know.Tell it like it is, if you know.  If not, we do not need to hear about it.

Many thanks to Empire and all of their people.  It was a great gesture to present this to the Polo Community, a free weekend on a fabulous site and they even had signature weather to go along with it.
